Orcas are beautiful and powerful, and although they are often called Killer Whales, they are not, in fact, whales (unlike this guy for example). The term orca is preferred by some to avoid the negative connotations of killer.
Orcas are actually dolphins; they are the largest of the dolphin, or delphinidae, family. Another member of this family is Hector’s dolphin. If you look closely at its shape, you’ll see that Orcas are more similar to it than to any of the larger species of whale.
Have you ever gone whale watching? What other fun facts do you know about whales or orcas? Tell us with a comment, or post it to our Facebook page.
The Hand Critters are an ever-growing family of cute critters made from the outline of their creator’s hand. They are available on gifts such as t-shirts, mugs, ornaments, cases for iPod, iPad and iPhone, and more. When shopping for gifts for yourself, your family or your friends, visit the Hand Critter store for a great selection.
The Hand Critters also star in two ABC books for the little ones at home. We have an edition in English and another in Spanish.
